Wat Polis me leert is dat een online discussie pas écht zin heeft als er iets op het spel staat. Dat de overheid daadwerkelijk iets doet met de uitkomsten van deze gesprekken, tilt het gesprek boven het niveau van ‘vrijblijvendheid’ uit. Het maakt dat de deelnemers – net als bij een referendum – weten dat de uitkomsten van hun discussie mogelijk ergens toe leiden. Dat zorgt voor een bepaalde betrokkenheid bij het publiek.

Hun nieuwsgierigheid won het van hun identiteit. En zo lijkt de oplossing voor onze psychologische barrières ineens heel simpel: zoek naar nieuwe informatie. Zoals schrijver Tim Harford zegt: ‘Go another click.’ Kies niet alleen artikelen die bevestigen wat je toch al dacht. Zoek naar informatie die je verrast, die ingaat tegen je overtuigingen, die je je misschien ongemakkelijk, boos of wanhopig laat voelen.

Nanette debuted at the Melbourne International Comedy festival in 2017, the year of Australia’s same-sex marriage postal plebiscite, and during fierce debate around the Safe Schools programme designed to support LGBTQI students. Homophobia was making its way back into the public sphere; a clear, disturbing regression. In the first third of Nanette, Gadsby deconstructs the autobiographical material she has aired over the years, including a tale about nearly getting beaten up at a bus stop, which gets the audience laughing gamely. In the second, she deconstructs comedy itself, and announces her intention to quit the circuit. To use self-deprecating humour when you are already deemed worthless, she suggests, is further humiliation. In the final third, she deconstructs misogyny, including her own internalised misogyny. She had never told the full story of the bus-stop incident, for example – that the man had come back and beaten her up, that nobody had stopped him, and that she didn’t go either to the police or the hospital afterwards, because she didn’t think she was worth it. Gadsby desperately needed to hear stories like hers when she was younger, but instead had been complicit in silencing them. No more.
