Ook in mijn nabije omgeving geven veel mensen af op "de media" en "de journalistiek". Jammer als alle journalistiek zo over één kam geschoren wordt. Je vergeet voor het gemak even dat de pers een belangrijke functie heeft om de macht te controleren en misstanden aan het licht te brengen. De pers is vaak de kanarie in de kolenmijn. In vele Westerse, ook Europese landen wordt de persvrijheid bedreigd, belanden journalisten en vrije bloggers in de cel omdat ze zaken zichtbaar maken die de zittende macht liever niet in de spotlights wil hebben.
Daarom is het van belang dat zelfs een narcistische klootzak als Assange beschermd wordt.

Whenever you read about journalists harming national security, massive alarm bells should start ringing. Think no further than Richard Nixon trying to prosecute the Pentagon Papers whistleblower, Daniel Ellsberg, for harming national security in 1971. Ellsberg, an intelligence analyst, found that the Vietnam war had been prosecuted on the basis of a web of lies and thought the public deserved to know.
